DEFINITION OF MUSICAL TERMS
*Octave:* This is a series of eight notes occupying the
interval between (and including) two notes one having twice or half the
frequency or vibration of the other.
*Triad:* This is a group or set of three notes connected
together.
*Note:* This is a single tone of definite pitch made by a
musical instrument, the human voice, animal or an object when rubbed on a
surface or blown by the wind.
There is a written sign representing the pitch and duration
of such sounds like the keys of a piano or similar instrument.
*Tone:* This is a musical or vocal sound with reference to
its pitch quality and strength. It is an interval of a major second. A sound with
distinctive quality.
*Tune:* This is a series of musical notes that make a simple
melody.
*Semitone:* This is half a tone; the smallest distance from
a tone.
Though there is *microtone* which is the actual shortest
distance between two notes in sound (to be discussed some other time)
*Chord:* This is a group of notes (usually three or more)
sounded together in harmony. It is harmonious and heard as if sounding
simultaneously.
