WORSHIP BASICS

THE MYSTERY OF SOUND (TMS)

Topic: WORSHIP BASICS

Instructor: Jesse Akpomera.

Our topic today is *WORSHIP BASICS*
Firstly, I'll like to say that all we learn and teach as doctrine must be from proper bible study. Our words must show a diligence to rightly divide God's word.

2 Timothy 2:15(KJV)
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
This therefore means what we teach believers here must mirror who we are and where we now stand in Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:17(KJV)
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he  is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
So it'll be safe to call this teaching *WORSHIP BASICS: For New Creatures in Christ.* It is necessary we emphasize this because it'll be difficult to produce believers who are sound in doctrine and can teach on worship from the scriptures, if our minds are not fixed on what we have become in Christ.
*Today all we'll do is lay the foundation on what worship truly is...*
*Main text:*
*John 4:21-24.(KJV)*
*21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at  Jerusalem, worship the Father.*
*22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.*
*23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.*
*24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.*

These are about the most popular verses about worship in the new testament so I felt its best we understand them properly.
We must notice that in the above 4 verses, *Jesus used the word "worship" 7 times and "worshipper" once.*

So Jesus' emphasis was on the "worship" and not the worshipper.
It simply means if we understand what worship is, identifying a true worshipper will not be a problem for *It is the worship that makes the worshipper!!!.*

"Worship" is *"proskuneō"* in greek and it means
~ to come before and kiss the ground
~to come with regard and offer something
*It simply means to come before someone with honour and respect to offer something( a sacrifice or gift).*
In bible interpretation there is a law of *first mention*
It means what a word means when it was first used in the bible most times maintain the same meaning throughout the bible.

We would investigate worship this way.
The word "worship" was first used in the  bible by Abraham.

Genesis 22:4-5(KJV)
4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; *and I and the lad will go yonder and worship,* and come again to you.

From the narrative we know Abraham was going to OFFER something. This was and still remains the reason for worship.
It is important to note also that
Abraham was not going to sing...
*So we see that worship ORIGINALLY from scriptures was never about singing but to offer sacrifices in honour to someone.*
We also see consistency in the meaning of worship in Matthew's narrative of the wise men in Bethlehem.

Matthew 2:1-2,11(KJV)
1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
2 Saying, Where is He that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen His star in the east, and are come to worship Him.
11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the Young Child with Mary His mother, *and fell down, and  worshipped Him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto Him gifts; gold, and frankincense and myrrh.*

So from scriptures it is safe to say *each time men worshipped they offered sacrifices or gave gifts to whomever they chose to worship.*
We see this in the old testament:
Deuteronomy 12:5-6(KJV)
5 But unto the place which the Lord your God shall choose out of all your tribes to put His name there, even unto His habitation shall ye seek, and thither thou shalt come:
6 *And thither ye shall bring your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices*, and your tithes, and heave offerings of your hand, and your vows, and your freewill offerings, and the firstlings of your herds and of your flocks:

This therefore gives meaning to what Jesus said about the worshipping in the "mountains and in Jerusalem."

John 4:21(KJV)
21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at  Jerusalem, worship the Father.

It simply means there will be no more sacrifices required to be offered as a sign of worship. The book of Hebrews tells us why...
Hebrews 10:1(KJV)
1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, *can NEVER with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.*
So the reason for the worship(offering sacrifices in the context of our main text) was for them to obtain PERFECTION before God.
The next verse explains further
Hebrews 10:2(KJV)
2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered? *because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins.*
3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year.

In explaining a word in scriptures, we must explain it in the context in which it was written.
Our knowledge of worship must be seen clearly the way Jesus explained in the context of John 4.

Having understood that worship means to come to a place and offer sacrifice/gifts to show honour to who is worshipped.
We must answer a very vital question...
*WHO IS A TRUE WORSHIPPER?*
As ALWAYS we must get our answer from THE WORD!.
John 4:23(KJV)
23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the *true worshippers* shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth:for the Father seeketh such to worship Him.

The word *"true" is "alethinos"* in greek and it means
~ opposite to what is imperfect defective, frail, uncertain.
*The word "TRUE" is used to distinguish between something that is temporary and permanent.*

John 1:6-9(KJV)
6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through Him might believe.
8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
9 That was the TRUE Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
Jesus is the one who is the TRUE(PERMANENT) light.
He came ONCE.
Another quick reference
John 6:32(KJV)
32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread  from heaven; *but my Father giveth you the TRUE bread from heaven.*

Jesus is the TRUE bread.
He was given ONCE.
*This therefore means that TRUE WORSHIP(according to the scriptures) is done ONCE!*
The word TRUE is the same root word Jesus used when He described Himself as THE TRUTH.
*Therefore, A TRUE WORSHIPPER IS ONE WHO COMES TO GOD ONCE WITH THE SACRIFICE OF JESUS.*
This refers to salvation.
A worshipper is TRUE because his worship(sacrifice for sins) is TRUE.

TRUE WORSHIP IS DONE ONCE because the sacrifice is perfect.
There is no verse in the entire new testament apart from John 4:23 that says God is "seeking" for true worshippers.

This simply means *the believer is the answer to all God was searching for.*
*WE ALL AS BELIEVERS ARE TRUE WORSHIPPERS!*

IT IS WRONG to make a believer doubt if his/her worship is accepted by threatening, saying he/she is not a true worshipper.
*Only those who come to God without Jesus as their worship(sacrifice) are not true worshippers.*
The last verse of our main text sums it all up
John 4:24(KJV)
24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth.

From scripture we know that the spirit is GIVEN by the Father.

So to worship in the spirit is not a "mood" but a STATE one comes into.

John 14:16-17(KJV)
16 And I will pray the Father, and He shall *give you* another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever;
17 *Even the Spirit of truth*; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him: but ye know Him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.

So everyone who has received the spirit of God worships God in the spirit.
So the basics of worship for the believer must first be that he realizes that HE/SHE IS A TRUE WORSHIPPER.
The believer must realize His worship is pure and perfect before the father
Tomorrow we shall consider the *"HOW"* in perfect worship to the Father.
Hope this blessed you
